From a young age, Freta, Barbara, Maya, and Reyna, four black girls from São Paulo, Brazil, have rapped together in the hope of becoming rap stars. Abandoning their usual back-up roles as a chorus for a male group, the four girls form their own hip-hop group, "Antonia," and prepare their own show. However, both poverty and everyday incidents, including male violence, threaten to disrupt their plan. Freta, who feels lonely at having to raise her daughter alone, gets into a fight with Maya for hanging out with Freta¡¯s boyfriend. Reyna¡¯s husband pressures her to quit singing while Barbara gets involved in a fight to avenge a hate crime against her younger gay brother, which leaves him almost dead. Rather than accept this harsh reality, however, the members of "Antonia" resist, singing hip-hop to the end. portrays the efforts of a group of free-spirited young people who express themselves and the rough reality that they are immersed in through the medium of hip-hop. To them, the popular musical form of hip-hop becomes a means to both resist and endure their harsh lives, and to pursue their freedom. (KIM Sunah) |
