is a collection of 7 short films from Reel Girls(2006), a media educational project involving female media specialists and young girls in their teens. In these 7 short films ranging from two to four minutes, the workshop participants portray, at times, in a rough but frank manner and, at other times, a deeply reflexive manner, the conditions that shape the lives of these girls in a complex multimedia environment. More than anything, however, these pieces, created under the mentorship of feminist media group members, leave a deep, lingering impression, in portraying the ways in which young girls use media to create, to derive pleasure, and to deal with diverse issues related to gender. The diverse genres employed within - feature films, dramas, music videos, documentaries, and cine-poems – are one of the film's chief strengths. (KWON Eun-sun) |

Piloted in 2001, Reel Grrls is a unique after-school media & technology training program that empowers girls to critique media images and to gain media technology skills in a safe, open environment, mentored by a network of multi-cultural women media professionals. Each year, 70 girls go through our program and graduate with valuable skills in video, audio, and web production. We believe that it is important to give young women the skills to critically evaluate the media they are exposed to and then to empower them to produce their own media. |
