Joseph manages a French Boxing Club where he trains his daughter, Angie and niece Sandra. Boxing is everything for this threesome. The evening of the French Championships, the defeat of one of the two girls throws the survival of the club into peril and shatters the family's equilibrium. Between Angie and Sandra, raised as if sisters, the bond is tested and a dangerous rivalry begins to fester, both inside the ring and out. |

Joseph is a kick boxing master with an aim to make his daughter and niece kick boxing champions in France. Kickboxing is a life in itself for Joseph, his daughter Angie and niece Angela. Joseph's wife Theresa dislikes and doesn't understand the world of kick boxing. Angie loses and Angela wins in the French championship. Angie and Angela who used to be just like sisters drift apart from each other, Joseph has an affair and Theresa feels puzzled on a search of her own exit. Joseph's only goal in his life is a victory in the rings and following Joseph's decision Angela loses weight and staves for double crown in the same weight with Angie. Angie gets more and more disillusioned at such a father's world of competition and fighting and follows her mother in separating from Joseph. Imprecating the kick boxing's movement and heroines' fearless eyes, it powerfully delivers women's choice to enter the man's world and disillusion. On the Ropes, Magaly Richard-Serrano's first feature film with ingenious organizing ability and an uncompromising theme unlike other debut directors makes us expect her to be another excellent director leading the future of women's film making. Magaly Richard-Serrano received her bachelors degree at A3 Film College, majoring the History of Arts in Isolated Lands. From 1993 to 2000, she directed 3 short films, Papa a Tue un Ange, Va Vori Ici, Viens Voir Ailleurs and Romantique Ta Mere!. She studied writing and directing at APCVL, the production workshop of Val de Loire and participated in a scenario workshop of FEMIS, which led her into writing the script of this film. On the Ropes is her first feature film. |
