New Currents introduces recently produced outstanding films by women filmmakers for special recognition from around the world over the past 1-2 years. In this section, the audiences of WFFIS who see the screening of these movies will have the opportunity to appreciate the work of these women directors. The 9th WFFIS puts emphasis on several new issues.
The first, women filmmaker's recent trends have been marked by themes of loss from circumstances such as death, disappearance, and separation. The movies, "Fissures", shows a woman who is a sound engineer's daughter attempts to discover the cause of her mother's death and "As the Shadow", shows an Italian lady, Claudia, tracks down a missing Ukraine woman, Olga. Especially "As the Shadow", which was made by one of the best female directors in Europe, is much different from most modern films. The usual modern films often have general characteristics of incomplete conclusions, no frame, dry, and boring plots for story lines, and so on. But this female director's film casts women in the main role to trace and solve the main theme of disappearance while men as the mediator to support which breaks from the traditional modern films in the male dominated movies.

The second, in this festival, female dominated films focused on searching and also breaking the gender discrimination in male dominated traditional society, but still questions of womenĄŻs position and condition remain in the real world. In the movies of <On the Ropes>, the daughter of a kick boxer leaves the ring where her father is the owner, < Antonia>, women rappers challenge into the most male centered hip-hop world, and <Blue, Karma, Tiger> vandals who express themselves through graffiti, all these movies focus to break through the wall of the male dominated society. On the other hand, <Pleasant Moments>, <This Girl is Mine>, <Cease Fire>, and <Making Pancakes> show the conflicts and the barriers encountered from womenĄŻs refusal of their traditional roles in the house like different chores for women such as labors around the house and raising children.

The third, this festival features a variety of categories and directors from several different countries shown at the same times. There are a total of 26 movies from 12 counties classified into the categories of comedy, thriller, science fiction, and mystery.
The fourth, this year's program introduces a harmony between the generation of the veteran and newcomer directors. New films by the prominent women filmmakers, Vera Chytilova and Tahmineh Milani who have previously been shown in WFFIS, reveal in depth the social perception and the artistic maturity to lead the next generation of female filmmakers as role models. In this festival, audiences will experience the full spectrum and stature of women's roles seen through women's eyes and appreciate the lives as depicted in these high-quality films. (KIM Sunah) |
