Márta Mészáros is known as a master world-wide who imbued the female identity into modern film history in East Europe. She started her film career as a documentary director in the late 50¡¯s with the beginning of the New wave in the Hungarian film scene. She has directed over 60 films. Among those, 30 of them are feature films, which secure her solid status as a female film director. Not only by the number of her works, but she has also proved her directing talent with quality works like <Adaptation> which has been acclaimed as a classic by a female director.
Actively involved working in film for over 50 years, she never stops shocking and moving audience. Also with the trust and respect she has earned from the world film industry entitles her to be known as one of the leading female directors. What makes her accomplishments even more special is that she has always dealt with women's issues by placing female characters at the center of her films. She deals with women's social condition and self-existence. Women's issues like sexuality and motherhood -Pregnancy, abortion and childbirth were the topics of Women's movement (Feminism) in East Europe in the mid 70's. While Feminism in East Europe focused on the right of abortion, Mészáros more cared for the childbirth which enabled women to think and act with their own will. Even though they shared the same purpose to advocate women's self-rights, films of Mészáros influenced other feminist cultures in different contexts of history and society in East Europe, which brought about more active debates on women's issues.

In her films, she brings women's personal experience into the moral issue of modern society. Something personal always integrates with something social and political. 4 films, so-called 'Cinema diary' based on her personal experience, are the best examples. Her parent¡¯s generation, her childhood and her youth are interwoven by two different styles, documentary and fiction. With their whimsical form and style, she provides the depth and diversity of Modern history which is viewed from women's perspective. 'Cinema-diary' was set in modern society which experienced political, social and moral crisis. She emphasizes the individual who has to survive. She asks the question how to survive under the collision of morality and the pressure of right choice. The search for the true identity of women shares its importance with the attitude toward the true meaning of life. Her 'Cinema-diary' is the moral story handed down to the next generation from the old generation who couldn¡¯t help being wound up with the turmoil of history.

The Close-up of women's gaze and unfamiliar silence in her film give the audience a tremendous touching moment for all these reasons. (Nam In-young)
