This year¡¯s New Currents will screen a total of 29 films, including 12 shorts, from 19 countries. The New Currents section introduces new films from the current tendency of woman directors in the world at a look. since New Currents focuses on new films by women directors that have women protagonists, as always, one might fall into the trap if She/he tries to characterize summarize them in a word. I will simply mention the salient differences and unique characteristics of this year¡¯s selection compared to that of last year¡¯s festival. |
The first change in the New Currents of the 10th IWFFIS is the large increase of feature films by women filmmakers. Of course this signals that more women filmmakers in the world are entering the motion picture industry. As seen in Red Road, Madonnas, Hounded, Vivere and Marcela, feature film productions by women directors have diversified, extending beyond previous formats or genres. This expansion of feature films also shows the increase in films by women directors to be invited to world film festivals. Winning the Prix Special du Jury of Cannes Film Festival, Red Road is a¡®Dogma 95¡¯style film by British director Andrea Arnold, who won Best Short Film at the Academy Awards with her debut work. Examining structures of emotion in the lives of women, Madonnas, Hounded, Vivere and Marcela have also received recognition as specially featured films at many world film festivals. Here, along with the films in the Open Cinema section, viewers can get a sense of the streams of current world cinema. The four Korean feature films, Never Forever, Forever the Moment, Shadows in the Palace and The Wonder Years are screened in this year IWFFIS to emphasize the unprecedented progress of women¡¯s participation in the korean motion picture industry. These films have been carefully selected among this year¡¯s theatrical releases because they rewrite the story of a girl¡¯s rite of passage into womanhood, focus on women communities, address women¡¯s issues, or provide a new perspective. |
The second change of this year is that the women protagonists in these films are mostly in their 30s. This goes for documentaries, feature films, comedies and dramas, and many of the women play the main characters. With few exceptions, the directors of these films are mostly in their 30s or 40s. This is also evidence of the increase in the numbers of women directors in the film industry. In the films, Late Bloomers, Iron Ladies of Liberia, 3 Women, Tie a Yellow Ribbon, Nyonya¡¯s Taste of Life and Vivere, women characters interact to show the dynamics of generation gaps and ethnic groups. The women protagonists each have personal histories and relationships, so most of the films use a parallel narrative structure. In addition, some of these films are road movies, in which the characters move, travel, and are constantly in transit: The Houses of Hristina and Made in L.A., which deal with women migrants laborers; Dinner with the President: a Nation¡¯s Journey, which conveys the reality of the struggle for human rights throughout Pakistan. In addition to these films, New Currents will also screen Viva, Women Directors! A documentary produced for the celebration of the 20th Tokyo International Women¡¯s Film Festival, Diving Women of Jeju-do by Barbara Hammer, and Judith Butler: Philosophical Encounters of the Third Kind, which deals with the philosophy of theorist and philosopher, Judith Butler.
